I have been practicing medicine, plastic surgery specifically, since 1989. Over the years I have had many interests but none, other than family, more important or gratifying to me than the practice of medicine.

I have spent time in academic centers, Army Medical Centers and private practice. All have afforded different experiences. I have enjoyed the challenges of complex trauma reconstruction as well as treating cancer victims. I have taken call in emergency rooms and performed complex craniofacial fracture and soft tissue repair. I have performed microvascular hand and finger replantation taking over 20 hrs. in the operating room.

Treating children for traumatic injuries as well as birth defects has been very rewarding. Traveling to foreign countries and providing care for those in need for cleft lip and palate has been gratifying.

For the last 20 years I have limited my practice to aesthetic elective surgery. This type of surgery is just as demanding as any other and affords me the chance to not only become friends with many of my patients but to truly make a difference in their lives and how they perceive themselves. Helping to increase another’s self esteem and seeing the effects on how they interact with others is wonderful.

As I age I have maintained my physical and mental abilities through exercise, reading and staying up to date with the latest medical advances. A little genetic luck doesn’t hurt either. My mother is 90 and going strong !

With experience comes wisdom. I believe I am at the top of my game and truly enjoy helping people achieve their goals. I have done so many cases and seen so many variations of patients that I am able to avoid many of the complications that a less experienced surgeon may experience.

A few of my patients have asked if I plan to retire soon. I have no plans at present. I may be more selective in the cases I do but my passion and dedication are unwavering. Now is the time to use all of the experience I have acquired for my patients.

All the Best,

Dr. J

Are you a mother who misses your pre-baby body? Do you wish you could restore your original shape? Cosmetic Surgery Associates in Bethesda, Maryland, can make your dreams come true! With our state-of-the-art mommy makeover procedures and top-tier services, we can help you reclaim your body, your confidence, and your self-esteem.

Understating Mommy Makeovers

Being a mother is a blessing and a joy. However, the physical changes that accompany motherhood can sometimes dampen the spirit of even the most enthusiastic of mothers. A Mommy Makeover is a customizable plastic surgery technique that addresses the body changes caused by childbirth and helps women regain their self-confidence.

The Benefits of a Mommy Makeover

A Mommy Makeover procedure that carefully targets your specific needs can have numerous benefits:

  • Restores Pre-baby physique
  • Boosts confidence and self-esteem
  • Improves overall body contour

Mommy Makeover Options

Pregnancy and childbirth are beautiful experiences, but they often leave lasting changes in a woman’s body. Mommy makeover procedures offer a comprehensive solution to address these physical changes, helping women regain their pre-pregnancy confidence and appearance.

Breast Enhancement

One of the primary concerns for many mothers is changes in breast size and shape post-pregnancy and breastfeeding. Mommy makeover options often include breast augmentation, reduction, or lift procedures to restore volume, symmetry, and firmness to the breasts, achieving a more youthful contour.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

The abdominal area undergoes significant changes during pregnancy, resulting in stretched skin, weakened abdominal muscles, and stubborn fat deposits. A tummy tuck procedure removes excess skin, tightens the abdominal muscles, and eliminates pockets of fat, resulting in a flatter, firmer abdomen.

Liposuction

Even with diet and exercise, some stubborn fat may persist after childbirth. Liposuction is a common component of mommy makeover procedures. It targets localized fat deposits in areas such as the hips, thighs, and abdomen to achieve smoother contours and enhance overall body proportions.

Consultation and Customization

Every woman’s body is unique, and mommy makeover procedures should be tailored to address individual concerns and goals. A thorough consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon is essential to discuss options, understand potential risks and benefits, and develop a personalized treatment plan that aligns with each patient’s desires and expectations.

If you check your Instagram or TikTok feed from time to time, there is a good chance you have come across posts or content related to cosmetic surgery. Perhaps you’ve seen testimonials from patients who share their thoughts on how their procedures went, or maybe you have seen cosmetic surgery specialists explaining why liposuction may work better than abdominoplasty for some patients. The next time you launch the app after seeing these posts, you may even run into other posts featuring doctors doing TikTok dance challenges.

The reality of cosmetic surgery as a social media topic is that it enjoys high engagement. Hashtags like #plasticsurgery and #beautytransformation get millions of views on Instagram, a platform where before-and-after photos, influencer endorsements, and surgeon profiles drive interest. TikTok has surpassed Facebook and Twitter in terms of cosmetic surgery trends, and it is catching up to Instagram. Social media interest in cosmetic surgery has been strong since the mid-2000s, but it was not until 2010 that professionals in the field realized the sheer marketing potential of social networks.

Competing For Social Media Clout

The rise of “Snapchat doctors” and “Instagram surgeons” can be traced to the popularity of cosmetic surgery reality shows on television. TLC, Bravo, E!, and even MTV jumped on this trend when Facebook and Twitter started gaining traction. By 2014, Snapchat doctors had become a topic of news media discussion, and they were followed by Instagram surgeons a few years later.

According to a 2019 survey conducted among members of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 61% of cosmetic surgeons have active social media accounts, and nearly 80% of this cohort reported using their accounts for promotional purposes. A 2023 survey conducted by researchers from the UC Davis School of Dermatology determined that 41% of patients felt optimistic about the social media presence of their cosmetic surgeons. Still, most did not choose their doctors based on social media activity.

Other market research studies show that those cosmetic surgery practices dedicating more time and effort to their social media followers tend to charge the highest fees; this makes sense when you see the high production values of the content they publish. Some cosmetic surgeons decide to step away from seeing patients once they start turning into social media celebrities; at this point, it becomes more lucrative for them to continue engaging millions of followers, which often means dialing up the entertainment angle when creating new content. This is when social media clout takes precedence over the practice as such.

At Cosmetic Surgery Associates in Bethesda, Maryland, Dr. Jabs, Dr. Magge, and Dr. Richards believe that social media is a good platform for patient education. Scheduling a plastic surgery appointment is within your control; arranging your menstrual cycle schedule is impossible. When your period comes close to or at the surgical date, should you reschedule or go to the appointment? This is a common concern for women, yet it is something rarely discussed or mentioned.

Is the Menstrual Cycle a Concern for Surgeons?

Having your period during surgery raises the question of whether hormonal changes associated with your period can affect surgical outcomes. Recent studies have shown that having surgery during your period does not increase surgical or menstrual bleeding. Having your period does not cause an adverse reaction or complications in surgery, even if normal cramps, headaches, and bloating occur.

What Do I Do if it Happens During the Visit?

For safety concerns, we ask that you do not wear a tampon on the day of your surgery (if your period has already started). The surgical procedure could take several hours and after surgery, it can take some time for the anesthesia to wear off so you will be unable to change it for some time. A tampon staying too long in your body could cause an infection so wear a pad instead and bring a few extra. If needed, your nurse can change your pad for you. This might sound embarrassing, but there is no need to be worried. After all, our job makes us used to handling blood and your period is just one more natural bodily function.

Let your surgeon or nurse know that you are on your period and they will let the team know so that we can plan around the situation during surgery. We have state-of-the-art equipment and sanitary products to make your stay comfortable during your period.

If your period is coming, and you’re unsure if it will come during surgery, bring pads anyway. Warn the surgeon or nurse that your cycle could come so the team can make preparations. Even if it’s a false alarm, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Will Surgery Affect Upcoming Cycles?

Side effects on periods occurring days or weeks after any type of surgery may occur. Your next few periods may be irregular and different than normal. Hormonal changes due to surgery are temporary. For most women there is no change. If changes happen they won’t last long, and your period will return to normal. If there are concerns, you can talk to Dr. Richards, Dr. Jabs, or Dr. Magge about it. With over 60 combined years of experience, they have the answers. If they do not, they have the resources to find the answers.

Schedule a Consultation

Don’t cancel your appointment because of bad timing with your menstrual cycle. We intend to treat you like family as we improve your appearance and make you feel at home. Your cycle is not a disruption to us and you should not let it disrupt your chance to achieve your cosmetic goals!

If you have been considering cosmetic surgery or if you have any questions about your upcoming surgery, contact the Cosmetic Surgery Associates today.

The cost of plastic surgery can vary wildly. Much of it depends on the type of procedure you’ve selected. Are you looking for a non-surgical procedure or something a bit more extensive? A lot of the cost also depends upon your location and plastic surgeon. For instance, the cost of a tummy tuck in California will probably be significantly different than in Maryland.

As you can see, there are a lot of different factors that go into the cost of your plastic surgery procedure. Here’s what to know about plastic surgery costs and what you can expect to learn during your consultation with our board-certified plastic surgeons.

Non-Surgical Vs. Surgical Procedure

Non-surgical procedures usually mean no downtime – but your results may only last a few months to years. Examples of non-surgical procedures include dermal fillers, microneedling, and laser skin resurfacing. Surgical procedures, on the other hand, require a few weeks of dedicated downtime but can last for many years. Some of the most popular surgical procedures are breast augmentation, liposuction, and rhinoplasty. Typically, non-surgical procedures cost much less than surgery, but surgery produces the most transformative results.

Factors That Determine Plastic Surgery Cost

There are a lot of things included in the cost of your plastic surgery estimate. It can be shocking to look at the numbers if you’re unaware of what determines the cost estimate. Here are the main things that will factor into your plastic surgery price during your consultation.

  • Procedure: Some procedures are inherently more expensive because they come with greater risk, cover more area, or require more specialization. Some procedures also include the cost of materials like implants.
  • Surgeon’s fees: A more experienced plastic surgeon will sometimes charge more than someone with less experience. This is because they may offer far knowledge, industry experience, and safety measures than an inexperienced plastic surgeon.
  • Anesthesiologist fees: Your plastic surgeon will have a preferred anesthesiologist that they work with. Many board-certified plastic surgeons have years of experience working with the same anesthesiologist and are adept at keeping your surgery safe and low-risk.
  • Surgical center fees: Any surgery also includes the cost of facilities, materials, and surgical staff. We perform surgeries at our own in-house, accredited surgical center equipped with its own team.

Should Your Plastic Surgeon Be Board Certified?

The plastic surgeon you choose should always be experienced and board-certified by entities like the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Experienced plastic surgeons are also members of the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) and the Aesthetic Society (ASAPS). Designations like F.A.C.S., or Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, are also good markers of an experience. These certifications require rigorous training and ongoing education, meaning they can directly impact the safety and success of your procedure. By opting for cheaper or less experienced surgeons, you risk your health and results. Always seek out a board-certified plastic surgeon for your cosmetic needs!

Most insurance companies don’t cover cosmetic surgery, usually because it’s considered an elective procedure. This can be disheartening if you’ve been looking forward to exploring ways to achieve your cosmetic goals. However, it’s important to know that there are many different options when it comes to financing your plastic surgery so you can fit it into your budget. Here are just a few of the best ways to pay for plastic surgery at Cosmetic Surgery Associates.

Use a Medical Credit Card

Dr. Richards, Dr. Jabs, and Dr. Magge offer financing via a medical credit card such as CareCredit® or Alphaeon™. This plastic surgery financing option is popular because it can also be used for other medical expenses that aren’t typically covered under insurance. It allows you to pay back your procedure at your own rate without tying you to a specific practice for repayment. Be aware, however, that medical credit cards come with high APR rates and you’ll need to stay on top of your payment plan.

Apply for a Fixed-Rate Personal Loan

A loan for plastic surgery usually falls under an unsecured personal loan. It’s one of the fastest ways of securing money for your surgical procedure. These are loans that normally range from $1,000 to $50,000 with a fixed APR, and loan repayments are made on a monthly basis. Compared to other financing options, personal loans may be cheaper when it comes to getting cosmetic surgery. People with a strong credit history usually have a considerably lower APR compared to a credit card. But those with poor credit scores may find the interest rates for personal unsecured loans very high. Make sure to check with your local credit union for the best rates on personal loans.

Start Saving Early

Borrowing money from lenders comes at a cost. It could be in form of penalties or high interest rates, which can make your total cost higher than the procedure itself. It’s always best to pay for big expenses out-of-pocket when you can, so consider setting a target or consulting a board-certified plastic surgeon to get a full-cost quote before you begin saving a bit each month. Even if you can offset half of your total expense with cash, it can help your long-term finances.

Schedule a Consultation

Plastic surgery can come at a high cost, but with big rewards. To meet with our team of board-certified plastic surgeons, contact our Bethesda, MD office by calling or filling out our online contact form.

It is no surprise that most people value efficiency. This can be applied to various different situations in life, including plastic surgery. The desire to “get in and get out” can bring a person to wonder if they can undergo multiple procedures at one time in order to save money and downtime while benefitting in multiple ways. There are several factors our doctors at Cosmetic Surgery Associates will consider for each patient, but regardless of intent and goals, there is often a path forward for multiple procedures during a single operation.

Are there any reasons that a multi-part surgery should not be attempted?

The first deciding factor to be addressed is simply the health of the patient. Exposure to anesthesia for a prolonged period of time is not recommended for those that have health conditions that can complicate the process, such as hypertension or asthma.

The second factor our doctors will take into consideration is whether the desired procedures are safe and an otherwise obtainable combination.

What procedures can be done in combination with one another?

When making the decision on what plastic surgery procedures can be done at the same time, safety and proper recovery are our number one priority. The recommended maximum number of procedures to undergo at once is three or less if they are extensive procedures.

Common multi-procedure pairings:

Mommy makeover. As the name entails, this is a combination of procedures that tend to be desirable for those who have raised one or more children. It is highly customizable but usually includes liposuction, a tummy tuck, and breast augmentation.

Breast augmentation and tummy tuck. This is an enlargement of the breast with an artificial implant coupled with the removal of excess fat and skin from the stomach area.

Rhinoplasty and facelift. These two procedures entail lifting the nose and altering its appearance as well as smoothing out lines and wrinkles throughout the face by removing excess skin.

What are the advantages versus the disadvantages of receiving more than one procedure at a time?

The biggest advantage would be the fact that the patient only has to go in for surgery once. Although our convenient location services areas like Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., one might wish to make one singular visit for surgery. This means only one time being sedated as well. Another advantage is simply making the change happen faster. Those who are seeking care from our board-certified plastic surgeons want to see change, and sometimes they want to see a lot of change quickly.

As far as disadvantages go, the healing time will be extended slightly for a person that undergoes more than one procedure. Recovery will be delayed as opposed to the recovery time of a singular procedure. Additionally, as mentioned previously, multiple procedures at one time may not be ideal for those that have non-serious but underlying conditions. This is because a high anesthesia dose is required for the patient to stay sedated for the time it takes for multiple procedures to be completed.

Combined Surgery in Maryland

Our plastic surgeons have over 15 years of experience, having performed thousands of procedures for all kinds of body types and desired outcomes. Patient safety and satisfaction are the two main priorities at Cosmetic Surgery Associates, and we are available to consult with any patient that feels they are a good candidate for multiple-procedure plastic surgery. Call or contact us online today to find out how we can help you achieve your goals with efficiency.

The post Does Plastic Surgery Have An Age Limit? appeared first on Cosmetic Surgery Associates.

]]>
There is no definitive answer to whether plastic surgery has an age limit. Many procedures can help people of all ages look and feel their best. This blog post will explain some of the things to consider with age so that you can explore your options if you are interested in plastic surgery.

There are many reasons that plastic surgery is applicable, exceeding the age limit, namely:

  1. Most importantly, age should not be an issue if the person is mentally and physically prepared for surgery. Sometimes a medical clearance from your doctor is requested by the plastic surgeon.
  2. The risks might be higher if you are older, but as long as you are well-informed, you can make your own decision. It’s always best to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon first before undergoing any surgery. They will give you recommendations and an honest opinion.
  3. Age should not be a limit because beauty has no age. If you want to feel confident about yourself, plastic surgery can be one way to fix areas of your body that you have been self-conscious about for a long time. Self-esteem is essential, especially as we age. We shouldn’t let our looks define us, but if undergoing surgery will make you feel better about yourself, then go for it!
  4. Many non-invasive procedures can be done, such as Botox® or fillers. If you’re not ready for more invasive surgery, many options are still available to help you achieve your desired look.
  5. Technology has advanced, and there are now many options for more minor invasive surgeries with quick recovery times. If you’re worried about the risks or recovery time, talk to your plastic surgeon about the latest technological advancements. They will be able to recommend the best option for you.
  6. Plastic surgery can be done for medical reasons, not just aesthetic ones. If you have a birthmark or scar that you’re self-conscious about, then plastic surgery can help boost your confidence. It can also correct functional problems, such as a deviated septum or back pain.
  7. It’s your body, and you can do whatever you want. If you feel plastic surgery is right for you, then it’s your decision. Just make sure to do your research and consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon first.
  8. The most important thing is that you will be happy with the results. If you’re not, then it’s not worth it. Make sure to consult with a few different surgeons before making your decision. Ask to see before and after photos and read reviews from other patients. It’s also important to have realistic expectations.

Remember that plastic surgery won’t completely change your life and it is important to have realistic expectations. However, if you’re unhappy with a particular aspect of your appearance, it can help boost your confidence and improve your quality of life.

One of the many decisions doctors have to make is how to handle patient jewelry during surgery. Do they tape it in place? Do they let patients wear it loose? What about the risks of operating on a patient with jewelry? What’s the best way to keep those earrings and necklaces from getting in the way? Here, we will provide some tips on how your doctor may handle your jewelry.

1. Talk with Patients Ahead Of Time

Doctors should talk with their patients before surgery about whether or not the patient is wearing any jewelry. This will allow your doctor to plan ahead and ensure that everything is taken care of before the surgery. It also gives your surgical team a chance to explain why it is important to either remove their jewelry or have it taped in place.

2. Consider The Risks

Physicians must always consider the risks of operating on a patient with jewelry. There is always the potential for infection if the jewelry is not clean. There is also the risk of the jewelry getting caught on something during the surgery and causing injury to the patient. This is why it is important for your doctor to discuss these risks with you ahead of time.

3. Remove Jewelry Before Surgery

One of the best ways to handle jewelry is to remove it before surgery. This will eliminate any potential risks during operation. Your doctor will store your jewelry in a safe place during the surgery and may provide you with a list of your jewelry to identify it when you wake up from surgery.

4. Tape Non-Removable Jewelry

If you have jewelry that cannot be removed, then your physician will need to tape it in place. The best way to tape jewelry in place is with medical tape. This type of tape is specially designed to be gentle on the skin and won’t pull off any hair or cause irritation.

5. Ensure Peripheral Venous Access

Your doctor will also need to ensure that he or she has good peripheral venous access. It may be more difficult for the surgical team to get IVs and other lines into place if bracelets or necklaces are in the way. Be sure to speak with your surgical team ahead of time and discuss any potential issues that may arise due to peripheral access.
