OK, it has been a while since I posted with a follow-up on how the restoration is coming. I have been so busy planning our new office. The hair has grown well. I still think it is somewhat thinner than when I was younger but it is sooooo much better than before. I still see short hairs, meaning that the follicles haven’t completely come through the transplant shock period. I can see it is thinner when lighted from above, but it is something I have noticed for the last 30 years. I get lots of compliments and I think it makes me look younger. I am considering doing another fill-in sometime during this coming year if I lose some more of the original hair. It is so easy to do in the office with little downtime. Here is a picture I shot just now in the office. Come see me to learn more if you are curious. I’m also investigating the new “robot” hair machine. More to come.

All the Best

OK, it’s been a  little over 3 months since I had my procedure here in the office. I have let my hair grow out a bit, including what was left in the front where I had the restoration. So far it has been easy. The one thing I can say is that it itches a bit and some of the follicles have gotten red as they return to growing. There really isn’t any filling in yet, as expected, because the follicles are in a resting or telogen phase. As they begin to grow and go into the anagen phase the density will increase. So for now and probably the next 3 to 4 mos I have to be patient and know it will improve. Right now it actually looks more sparse than it did immediately after the procedure because so many of the hair shafts that were transplanted have fallen out. NOT the follicle, just the shaft, which will grow back again as the follicle shifts out of its transplant shock and into the growth (anagen) phase. Here is where I stand now. More to follow.

OK, it has been three weeks and my hair is finally starting to grow back. The area with the transplanted hair is still in shock I think. The hair hasn’t fallen out like it often does, but it hasn’t started to grow back either. I am expecting it to take a few months more before the hair begins to grow. In the meantime, I can tell you that the area where the hair was harvested, as well as the area where it was transplanted, is ITCHY! There is still some soreness but the feeling has returned and the swelling has markedly diminished.

It has now been 2 weeks since the FUE procedure. My scalp is almost back to normal. It takes a while for the swelling to come down and you definitely feel the effects of so many individual holes being made to harvest and transplant the hairs. Once I began to gently rub the area where the hair was placed with shampoo in the shower at around day 10 the softness returned and the scalp began to feel normal. I still have the occasional twinge as the sensation fully returns but it isn’t bad. One of the most interesting things for me has been the comments from female staff and patients about how they like the shorter look. I’ll let it grow out some more and see how it looks before committing to a shorter look. It sure is easy to take care of though. I am expecting most of the hair to fall out that was transplanted due to transplant shock but you never can tell. It may just start growing. Overall it has been easy and the look isn’t bad at all.

Many people are surprised when they learn that most of the transplanted hair shafts fall out within the first month after surgery. It is normal and you shouldn’t be alarmed. The follicles remain and are just going through transplant shock. The hair resumes growth over the next several months and grows at the rate of 1/2 to 1 inch per month. Sometimes it takes 7 to 9 months for all of the hairs to start growing. I’m actually expecting to look very similar to my pre-transplant appearance for a while until the hair begs to come back. I’ll be posting so we can see how it goes.

5 Days Out https://cosmeticplastics.com/hair-restoration/5-days-out/ Thu, 25 Aug 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://cosmeticplastics.com/5-days-out/ It’s been 5 days since the hair transplant. It is already looking more natural. My recent haircut helped a bunch. I still have to be careful sleeping so that I don’t lay on the front part because it is sensitive too. Swelling is minimal. I started showering with soap applied in a two-finger circular motion today which felt really good. The hair is slanted forward (as is normal hair on the top of the scalp) and it is already starting to feel as if it is lying down. I just look like I have a “high and tight” haircut as my Navy buddy Ben calls it.
I can exercise now and took the opportunity to go to the driving range today to hit 2 buckets of balls.
No problem.
I’ll post some more pics as time goes by to show you how it looks as it grows out.

It’s been 48 hours and I went to work today and did surgery. No problem. I have just a little swelling on the back of my head but otherwise, it has been easy. I slept in a recliner last night to give myself the best chance of quickly healing.
I visited my hairdresser, Amy Miller, at Zohra Salon, who evened the remaining hair out and gave me a nice military look. I was also able to rinse my head today in the shower and cleanse my scalp with a gentle shampoo applied with two fingers very gently.

If you are like me, the older you get the more hair you lose. I have decided to fight back and have the hair I am losing in the front replaced by the hair from the back of my scalp that is not sensitive to testosterone. Looking into this I have decided to offer this procedure to my patients as well. To show how well it works, I’ve decided to have it done on me first.

There are several ways to do this surgery, but I think the best is to have a procedure that can be done in the office under minimal to no anesthesia ( I took a few pills and slept through my procedure yesterday), with as little pain as possible. To tell you the truth, it really doesn’t hurt very much at all.
I looked at plugs (old school and very noticeable), strips (where the doctor takes a scalpel to your head and removes a strip of hair-bearing tissue and then dissects it on a table to separate the hairs which leaves a long, transverse scar on your head) or FUE, follicular Unit Extraction. I decided to offer my patients the latter and to have the procedure done on me.

In this technique, your scalp is numbed and a technician harvests INDIVIDUAL hairs with a rotary tool that leaves little punctures. The hair is then inserted into the areas you need it ONE HAIR AT A TIME. You cannot believe how nice this leaves the donor area and how natural your hair looks.

I had it done yesterday, 1200 hairs over 5 hours, and I felt very little. I slept the whole time! I did wake up long enough for a sandwich and then, back to sleep. Not a bad afternoon at all. I am posting the pre-op and 1st-day pics today with more to follow.

Follow along with me as we see the changes.
