How to Prepare for a Breast Augmentation

Avoid drugs that increase bleeding

The “Big Five” are most commonly responsible for post operative bleeding complications. Aspirin, Motrin, fish oil, flaxseed and melatonin. Any drug or over the counter medication that impedes clotting should be stopped two weeks prior to surgery. Check with us. We have a list we will give you prior to surgery of what to avoid.

Stop Smoking

Smoking impacts your circulation and blood pressure, contributing to surgical complications and inhibiting proper healing. Many surgeons will not operate on patients who are regular smokers unless they have quit for several weeks before the procedure. This rule also applies to vapes or anything recreational inhalant.

Eat Balanced, Nutritious Meals

Since inquiring minds want to know, here are the main points to remember about breast augmentation and nipples. But first, for those not up on the professional terminology, a bit of review. The area that a majority of women call the nipple is known in the vernacular as the NAC or nipple-areola complex.

What most women refer to as the nipple is actually the anatomical portion that projects out of the very center of the previously-mentioned nipple-areola complex. This is the part that will become erect when stimulated and provides milk to a nursing infant. The pigmented skin around the nipple is the areola.

Now, let’s address some common questions.

Will getting a breast augmentation enlarge my nipples?

If you review a photo gallery of previous breast augmentation patients, you will undoubtedly notice that in most cases a woman’s NAC does not automatically become larger simply because she has had breast augmentation. Cleavage is not just the cup size but actually refers to the closeness of your breasts. When cleavage is close, it can feel sexier and make clothes fit more flatteringly as well. When you undergo augmentation, the implant volume could lead to a slight narrowing of the gap between your breasts. A well-experienced surgeon needs to manage your expectations well and help you understand your natural breast shape so that you know what is achievable with the augmentation procedure.

What is dimensional planning?

Even though breast augmentation is a highly customizable procedure, your surgeon cannot change your individual breast shape. Everybody has a different size and shape to their breasts, as well as varying chest measurements. Some of the common breast shapes include round, athletic or muscular, bell shape with a relaxed lower pole, wide set, nipples pointing to the side, asymmetric, and teardrop-shaped breasts. Background:

In submuscular breast augmentation, the muscle is transected along its inferior and medial border to allow the implant to rest beneath the breast mound and supply adequate cleavage. This leads to significant pain in the postoperative period. Objective: This study was undertaken to quantitatively document the effectiveness of tumescent infiltration and bupivacaine with epinephrine injection in controlling postoperative pain in primary submuscular breast augmentation and its effect on operating time, narcotic use, and complications.

Methods:

A retrospective chart review of 150 primary submuscular augmentation mammaplasties performed by 2 surgeons was conducted. Seventy-five consecutive augmentations performed by each physician during the same time period were studied. One surgeon used tumescent infiltration, using a syringe and a blunt infiltration cannula, placing 50 mL of standard tumescent solution in the planned pocket area of each breast before dissection. In addition, all cut muscle ends were injected with 0.25% bupivacaine with epinephrine (1:100,000, 40 mL per patient) under direct vision. The other surgeon omitted these steps. Patients evaluated pain subjectively using a 0 to 10 numeric pain intensity scale reported to the recovery room staff at specific times in the postanesthetic care unit.

Bleeding during surgery is normal and it is usually controllable. If the bleeding happens after surgery then it should cease after the first few hours.

Breast augmentation complication – bleeding

If the bleeding starts once the surgery is over, it results in one of the breasts getting bruised and becoming larger than the other. Depending on the severity of bruising, your doctor will decide whether you will need to go back to surgery or not. The enlargement of the breast and its bruising may or may not cause additional pain. Plastic surgeons place a drain on the exit wound through the skin to diagnose if the bleeding is normal or abnormal. If the drain is filled with thick blood, it is an indication that all is not well and another operation will need to be performed.

However, if a bruise develops post several days of surgery, it shouldn’t necessarily scare you. It could be the result of a small blood vessel in the chest tissue acting up. Ideally, it is harmless as the delayed bleeding traces can be found around the bruises caused by incisions during surgery. To have peace of mind, you can still get it checked by your plastic surgeon.

Breast augmentation complication – infection

Dr. A. Dean Jabs who is a plastic surgeon and works out of Bethesda, MD and McLean, VA; Northern Virginia; Fairfax, VA; Alexandria, VA, Chevy Chase, MD; Rockville, MD, says that infection post breast implant surgery is of two types and in both cases, it involves removing the implant from patients breast tissue.

In the first type of infection, which usually happens after a week of augmentation surgery, the patient feels unusually sick and has a fever. The breasts feel tender and so does the skin which is a shade of red. Your cosmetic surgeon can determine the course of removal of implants after a physical check-up.

The second type of infection is not evident but it starts showing its impact over some time. The breasts can turn red and their skin can get thin. In many cases, women can suspect an infection only when the implant breaks through the skin. Implant removal is a must and this infection can lead to loss of breast tissue and it can leave a scar at the exit place of the implant.
