Undergoing significant weight loss is a commendable achievement, but it often leaves individuals with excess skin and tissues that can diminish the joy of reaching one’s weight goals. At Cosmetic Surgery Associates in Bethesda, MD, we believe in the empowering journey of refining your results through post-weight-loss surgery, enabling you to truly feel confident in your new body. In this post, we will explore key procedures and benefits, practical tips, and the transformative power of cosmetic surgery.

Body Contouring After Weight Loss: Procedures in Bethesda, MD

Tummy Tuck in Bethesda: Create a Flatter Stomach

The tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, tightens the abdominal muscles and removes excess skin and fat, creating a firmer and flatter stomach. This is especially beneficial for enhancing post-weight-loss changes where loose skin around the abdomen is common.

Comprehensive Results with a Body Lift

A body lift addresses multiple areas of the body, including the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs, providing comprehensive contouring. This procedure helps in smoothing and tightening large areas of sagging skin, offering a dramatic improvement in body shape.

Restore Youthful Contours with a Breast Lift

After massive weight loss, the breasts can lose their shape and firmness. A breast lift repositions the breasts, providing them with a youthful contour that can enhance your overall appearance.

Sculpted Results with a Thigh Lift

A thigh lift specifically targets sagging skin on the inner and outer thighs, sculpting a more toned appearance. This procedure is ideal for those who experience excess skin that makes daily activity uncomfortable.

Sleeker Arms with Brachioplasty

Also known as brachioplasty, an arm lift removes excess skin hanging from the upper arms, often dubbed “bat wings.” This surgery reshapes the arm for a sleeker profile, allowing you to wear sleeveless clothing confidently.

Facial Contouring Near Washington, D.C.

Significant weight loss can affect facial structure, causing skin laxity. Facial contouring helps restore a youthful appearance, targeting sagging cheeks, jowls, and neck areas.

Liposuction for Precision Contouring

Liposuction is a versatile procedure used to remove stubborn fat deposits unaffected by weight loss. It can be used alone or in conjunction with other surgeries to refine body contouring results further.

Preparing for Surgery

Preparation is key to a smooth surgery and recovery. Consult with our surgeons to discuss your goals and medical history. You will likely need to undergo lab testing, refrain from smoking, and avoid certain medications leading up to your procedure. Creating a recovery-friendly space at home and arranging for assistance during the initial healing period can significantly improve your experience.

Recovery Timeline

Recovery times vary per procedure but generally range from two weeks to a few months. Patients typically experience swelling and bruising, and it’s crucial to follow postoperative instructions for optimal healing. Recovery milestones often include returning to light activities within two weeks and resuming normal routines within a few months. You will gradually see your results develop and enjoy the confidence that comes with your new look.

Benefits of Post-Weight-Loss Cosmetic Surgery

Navigating post-weight loss can be challenging emotionally and physically. Beyond aesthetic improvement, the emotional benefits of these procedures include:

  • Increased self-esteem and confidence.
  • Improved comfort and mobility.
  • Enhanced quality of life and well-being.

These procedures are fully customized to address the areas most affected by your weight loss, ensuring a unique and personalized approach to care.

Cosmetic surgery has become popular among men seeking to enhance their appearance. Over 1.3 million men in the U.S. are estimated to undergo or have undergone cosmetic procedures. Modern men are turning to these procedures to achieve a more youthful look and address specific aesthetic concerns. As a result, they regain their confidence and overall well-being.

Common Cosmetic Procedures for Men

There are many cosmetic surgeries for men. However, some are more sought after than others. The most popular ones include:

Gynecomastia Procedure

The term gynecomastia denotes the excessive growth of breasts in men. This excess tissue leaves men feeling self-conscious and lowers their self-esteem. Common causes of gynecomastia include hormonal imbalance, weight gain, and genetics. Although losing weight and rebalancing hormones solves this issue, those with persistent breast tissue will benefit from this cosmetic procedure. Male breast reduction will give the patient a more contoured and leaner chest, restoring their intended look and confidence.

Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck is also known as abdominoplasty. This cosmetic surgical procedure helps men achieve a firmer, more toned abdominal profile. Abdominoplasty addresses excess skin and fat in the abdominal area resulting from significant weight loss, aging, or genetic predisposition. Tummy tucks remove excess skin and fat and tighten abdominal muscles to create a more sculpted appearance. Many men opt for this procedure to regain a more youthful and athletic physique.

Liposuction

Liposuction removes stubborn fat pockets from specific body areas. It involves the targeted suctioning of excess fat deposits through a small tube. As a result, it gives you a more defined and proportionate physique. Men often seek liposuction to address areas that resist diet and exercise. These include the abdomen, flanks, chest, and love handles. This procedure is not a weight loss solution. It enhances body contours and gives men a more refined appearance.

Blepharoplasty Cosmetic Procedure

Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, addresses issues related to the eyelids. It aims to rejuvenate the appearance of the eyes. This surgery corrects under-eye bags, excess skin, and fat. After the surgery, you’ll get a refreshed and less tired appearance.

Botox® Procedure

Botox® is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure involving the injection of a purified botulinum toxin. The injection temporarily reduces the appearance of facial wrinkles and fine lines. This treatment targets specific muscles around the forehead, around the eyes, and between the eyebrows. It creates a smoother and more youthful facial appearance.

Men and women alike consider a flat and toned stomach the ideal of an attractive and fit body. However, lifestyle changes, childbearing, and weight changes can make it quite challenging to achieve a flat tummy. The surgery is an ideal solution for anyone who wants to tighten the abdominal muscles and get rid of excess skin and fat from their stomachs.

At Cosmetic Surgery Associates, we provide tummy tuck surgery, also known as abdominoplasty, to solve your belly issues and eliminate unwanted fat or skin. Our board-certified plastic surgeons assist both men and women in Bethesda, MD to achieve their desired results through abdominoplasty. Your physique and confidence will drastically improve after a tummy tuck.

If you have been considering this surgery, you have probably come across several myths that may have discouraged you from pursuing this option. Fortunately, we’re here to debunk a few of the most common tummy tuck misconceptions.

You Are Too Old for a Tummy Tuck

Don’t allow age to limit you if you are interested in getting tummy tuck surgery. We have patients over the age of 55 visiting our clinic at Cosmetic Surgery Associates in Bethesda, MD, to get an abdominoplasty. There isn’t a wrong number for undergoing a tummy tuck surgery. When you visit Cosmetic Surgery Associates for a tummy tuck, our doctors consider several factors, such as your physical health and being stable and within a healthy weight range to qualify for a tummy tuck, but not necessarily your age.

Tummy Tucks Are Only for Women

While a considerable percentage of women make up total tummy tuck surgeries, men can benefit from an abdominoplasty. Abdominoplasty has for several years been a popular cosmetic surgery among men dealing with irreversible body changes like stretched skin after losing a lot of weight. According to our doctors, more men are visiting Cosmetic Surgery Associates to eliminate their stubborn belly fat and tighten loose skin, helping them to improve their self-esteem. Men can also undergo tummy tuck surgery to restore a fit and youthful stomach and fit in those clothes you love.

You Can Achieve Same Results of Tummy Tucks With Exercise

The truth is that a tummy tuck surgery helps you to achieve results that exercising and dieting can never fix. Healthy eating and regular exercise can help you look better, but they cannot eliminate the amounts of tissue and loose skin hanging on your tummy after childbirth or a significant weight loss. During the tummy tuck surgery, our doctors remove the excess tissue and skin and contour your abdominal area to give you a flatter and more youthful appearance.

These are some of the misconceptions surrounding tummy tucks that you shouldn’t allow getting in your way to the body you desire. Are you unhappy with the way your tummy looks? It may be that you’ve just lost a large amount of weight but still have pockets of excess abdominal fat. Drastic weight loss and pregnancy can also leave you with loose and sagging abdominal skin that makes it difficult to truly appreciate your trimmer physique. Are you ready to reshape, refine, and smooth out your midsection? At Cosmetic Surgery Associates in Bethesda, MD, we provide both tummy tucks (abdominoplasty) and liposuction.

Each of these procedures produces excellent results. But which one is best for you?

Liposuction Is Less Invasive Than a Tummy Tuck

Liposuction may be the right procedure if you’re looking to eliminate excess fat around the abdominal region and refine your body when you do not have loose skin. Liposuction is great for eliminating stubborn fat deposits with a single treatment. In addition to being an effective way to get rid of unwanted fat at the abdomen, this surgery can also be used to trim and refine the hips, flanks, arms, thighs, and other areas. One thing to note, however, is that although liposuction empties the skin by eliminating unwanted fat stores, it is not a skin tightening treatment.

While liposuction is less invasive than a tummy tuck, it is still a surgical procedure and therefore requires a period of recovery. Compared to abdominoplasty recoveries, however, a liposuction recovery is significantly shorter and much easier overall. Many of our patients feel better within just a matter of a week, and most are able to return to work or their other normal activities within days. After three weeks, much of the resulting bruising and swelling will have abated.  However, it does take a year to see final results. At Cosmetic Surgery Associates, our doctors all take the recovery process quite seriously. We understand that a good recovery is essential for ensuring an optimum outcome. That’s why we’re always available to offer the guidance and support that patients require, and to monitor their improvements throughout the entire healing process.

Abdominoplasty Can Eliminate Both Unwanted Fat and Excess Skin

The fat removal provided by liposuction can be sufficient for helping some patients reach their cosmetic goals. Others, however, might need the benefit of excess skin removal. Abdominoplasty procedures are more invasive, but they are also able to address loose and sagging skin along with muscle laxity. These additional benefits are sometimes necessary for both those who’ve dropped considerable weight and those who have given birth. For people seeking cosmetic improvements in the abdominal area following bariatric surgery and pregnancy, liposuction and abdominoplasty may be recommended together.

Excess, unwanted skin and tissue can be excised from the lower and mid-abdomen with abdominoplasty. Tummy tucks additionally tighten lax muscles in the abdominal region so that the stomach can again lie flat. Following this procedure, patients will have scars that may extend from one hip to the other, but they will be placed very low, and be able to be hidden by a bikini and underwear.  Tummy tuck recovery times are longer than for liposuction alone, and generally a full two weeks is needed off from work.

People with strong core muscles tend to have the shortest recoveries. You’ll want to relax throughout the healing process by avoiding strenuous exercises and activities. However, it’s also important to remember that certain forms of gentle exercise can actually play a key role in expediting the natural healing process, and walking is encouraged starting the day after surgery. Full unrestricted exercise, including core workouts can be restarted after 6-8 weeks.  After approximately one year, scarring from an abdominoplasty procedure will have faded significantly. All remaining scars can be easily concealed with a strategically chosen bathing suit or other garment.

Having Abdominoplasty and Liposuction Performed Together

Both liposuction and abdominoplasty can be effective standalone treatments in many instances, but some patients opt to have both of these procedures performed together. We may recommend both procedures based upon your cosmetic concerns and your overall cosmetic goals. Liposuction can sculpt, refine, and reshape the abdomen and flanks, while abdominoplasty can address loose skin and loose muscles.

Schedule a consultation with us at Cosmetic Surgery Associates to talk about your aesthetic concerns and we’ll help you find the best treatment for your needs. Get in contact by calling or filling out an online form.

A tummy tuck is a cosmetic procedure where loose skin is removed from the tummy. An incision is made in the lower abdomen beneath the swimsuit line and just above the pubic hairline. The skin that overlaps the incision is removed. Depending on where the problem area is, a patient can opt for a full or mini tummy tuck.

Full Vs. Mini

If the skin is loose below the belly button, the skin would be pulled down and removed. In this case, the only scar the patient would have would be on the lower belly underneath the swimsuit line. This is referred to as a lower or mini tummy tuck. In this procedure, the skin above the belly button is not tightened. If the patient has a lot of loose skin above the belly button, a mini tummy tuck will not address it.

If the skin is loose above the belly button, a full tummy tuck will likely be recommended. The decision whether to get a full or mini tummy tuck is determined by whether the belly button or the upper belly skin is stretched. Only a full tummy tuck procedure will correct the full stomach area. If the concern is just in the lower area of the tummy, a mini should be fine.

The Appearance of Scarring

In a full tummy tuck procedure, there is typically a scar in the lower tummy as well as a scar around the belly button. This will help give a large or stretched-out belly button an improved appearance. The incisions for the tummy tuck are made at the bikini line and are easily covered up by clothing. So, you should not have any noticeable scarring.

Tummy Tucks and Muscle Tightening

Sometimes after pregnancy, the abdominal wall that supports the abdominal muscles are stretched and the muscles are separated, this is called diastasis recti. This is why one of the goals of a full tummy tuck is to tighten the muscles and fascia before tightening the skin. There are some cases where this step is not required.

Tummy Tucks and Fat Reduction

Removing fat at the time of the tummy tuck is controversial. The fat that is deep to the Scarpa’s layer (strength layer) of the abdomen will be sharply removed and can be safely defatted.  Some cosmetic surgeons will perform a liposuction procedure at the same time as a full tummy tuck if needed.

Somewhere In Between A Mini and A Full Tummy Tuck

There is one variation of the tummy tuck procedure that uses a modified tummy tuck with an umbilical float. Patients with mild abdominal laxity above the belly button are good candidates for this procedure. The process will only provide mild tightening of the skin. To determine which procedure would best fit your desired result, schedule a consultation with Cosmetic Surgery Associates. We will be happy to go over the process and your expected results.

At Cosmetic Surgery Associates, we realize that excess skin and fat around your stomach can be extremely frustrating. Childbirth, weight loss, and the hormonal changes that come with aging can lead to excess skin and fat in the abdominal region which is tough to get rid of even with a solid diet and exercise regimen.

That’s why, at Cosmetic Surgery Associates, we specialize in tummy tucks, also known as abdominoplasty. We want to be able to provide you with the best results to achieve the waist and flat stomach you have always wanted.

Tummy tucks are also great for repairing weakened, damaged muscles. This will result in the tightening of your stomach overall. When you book your consultation with a surgeon at our office, we’ll help you to achieve the long-term results you deserve with our specialized tummy tuck procedure.

Who are the best candidates for a Tummy Tuck

Having surgery is not always an easy decision to make. But with one of our consultations, we can help make the decision a bit easier by answering all of your questions and concerns.

Overall, you could be a good tummy tuck candidate if:

  • You are in good physical health
  • You are at a stable weight
  • You can maintain your weight after surgery
  • Your expectations about tummy tucks are realistic
  • You want to change the appearance of your abdomen

Who should not consider a Tummy Tuck?

If at any time in the future, you plan on getting pregnant, then you should wait until you are finished having kids to have this surgery. Also, if you are planning to lose a significant amount of weight, then this surgery is not recommended for you. Lastly, if you are not prepared for significant downtime to recover from surgery, then you should not consider a tummy tuck at this time.

How to prepare for Tummy Tuck surgery

To prepare for your tummy tuck procedure, you need to be at or near your desired weight. Maintaining a stable weight will prevent fluctuations from happening after surgery. Weight fluctuations can undo the results you get from the tummy tuck procedure.

Taking care of yourself after surgery

Your recovery may take up to three weeks. Have someone who can assist you with kids and household chores during your downtime. Make sure to schedule plenty of time for rest because healing will be vital for your overall recovery.

Returning to daily life

For about six to eight weeks, you’ll need to avoid any type of strenuous physical activity. But after a few months, you should start feeling like you’re back to normal. Your surgeon at Cosmetic Surgery Associates will inform you when you are free to resume all activities.

If you have any questions regarding the tummy tuck procedure, contact our office to schedule your consultation with one of our specialists.

Even though you can successfully lose excessive weight with targeted exercises, sagging skin won’t respond with diet and exercise alone. For this reason, a tummy tuck is the best option for removing extra skin from your abdomen. This plastic surgery procedure also tightens the abdominal muscles, which cannot be achieved even with strenuous exercises. With tummy tuck surgery, you can achieve slimmer and more toned contours. However, it’s important to know that there are generally two types of tummy tucks, and one might benefit you more than the other. Here’s a quick guide.

Are you a good candidate for tummy tuck?

You are a good candidate for a tummy tuck procedure if you are struggling with extra fat and skin in the abdominal area. This can also include loose stomach muscles and sagging skin. These are common changes that your body goes through after pregnancy or massive weight loss, including after bariatric surgery.

During your consultation, your plastic surgeon will evaluate your skin and abdominal area and discuss your goals before determining whether you are a good candidate.

Advantages of the tummy tuck

The tummy tuck is mostly opted for by women who wish to regain their abdominal shape after pregnancy, or by patients who have excessive skin and separated muscles from weight gain and loss. Pregnancy affects a woman’s body negatively, especially the abdominal area which is left stretched and sagging. The loose skin on the abdomen can be addressed with panniculectomy, which can be done with or without the abdominoplasty procedure.

It’s important to understand that the tummy tuck is not a weight loss procedure and only helps you tighten muscles and eliminate excess skin.

Mini or full tummy tuck?

The mini tummy tuck is the best option if you have excessive skin limited to the area below your belly button or minimal looseness above the belly button. The underlying abdominal muscles can also be tightened during this procedure. Since this surgery is less invasive than the full tummy tuck, the recovery from a mini tummy tuck is also faster. At times, it can be combined with liposuction to give you more dramatic results.

The full tummy tuck procedure uses panniculectomy to address loose skin in the entire abdominal area. The excessive skin from these regions is removed, the abdominal muscles are tightened, and the remaining skin is redraped. Liposuction can help enhance the results of your full tummy tuck procedure to give you a leaner and toned physique.

It takes about 3 hours for a full tummy tuck while the mini tummy tuck takes around 2 hours.

Results from your tummy tuck

When you take good care of yourself during the recovery period, your results from a tummy tuck procedure can last several years. Additionally, no matter what type of tummy tuck you get, the scar will likely be minimally visible.

Any significant weight fluctuations after your procedure can change how your abdomen looks. A future pregnancy can also alter your results from the tummy tuck surgery, so you should be sure to carefully consider your future plans—and opt for non-surgical alternatives if needed.

Once you have achieved your desired abdominal shape with the procedure that is best for you, you should be sure to form habits with the right diet with a good exercise regimen. When you live healthy after your surgery, your results can last for many years to come.

Schedule a Consultation

When it comes to rejuvenating the abdomen and crafting your ideal contours, tummy tuck surgery is the premier option. To get started on discussing the best tummy tuck for you, contact our office by calling or filling out our online form. During a tummy tuck surgery that removes excess fat from the stomach area, plastic surgeons also restore weak and frayed muscles from that area to make a smooth and firm profile. According to figures released by the American Society for Plastic Surgery tummy tuck or “abdominoplasty” is among the top five surgical procedures performed between men and women during 2014. The most common causes of the sagging stomach in Northern Virginia and elsewhere around the world are age, pregnancy, heredity, and sudden weight loss. Though most people in reasonably good health with excess fat deposits in the midsection can undergo tummy tuck surgery, they cannot do so if they have serious medical conditions.

Different types of tummy tuck cosmetic surgeries

Full Tummy Tuck – In this procedure the entire skin of the abdominal area is lifted off the underlying muscles after the incision is made around the belly button to keep it attached to the wall muscles. After the removal of excess skin and fat, the belly button area is tightened and repaired. A full tummy tuck is most commonly performed on women that have the problem of split abdominal muscles or Diastasis Recti in Chevy Chase, MD.

Mini Tummy Tuck – During this procedure Dr. A. Dean Jabs only removes loose abdominal skin without making any cuts around the belly button area. If the patient specifically requires a bikini tuck then mini abdominoplasty is carried out by making incisions along the bikini line in Rockville, MD.

Nonsurgical Tummy Tuck – Abdominal tightening can also be achieved with lasers liposuction technique referred to as SlimLipo. This non-surgical method provides both skin tightening and fat removal and is preferred by people that are not comfortable with full abdominoplasty. Other types of non-surgical tummy tuck methods in Alexandria, VA are LuxIR Deep, Thermage, and radiofrequency energy to tighten skin.

Recovery and risks – As explained by plastic surgeons

You may select the best plastic surgeon and hospital in Bethesda, MD for the procedure but you will have to tolerate pain and swelling for at least a couple of weeks following surgery and soreness for months afterward. It generally takes between seven to ten days for patients to walk straight after the abdominoplasty surgery. If you have pre-existing illnesses like liver disease, diabetes, or lung problems then you may suffer from complications like blood clots or bleeding which can lead to a slow healing process.

Being an intensive cosmetic surgery procedure lasting at least four to five hours involving large incisions, the tummy tuck may leave you with large scars that will stay for a lifetime. After the surgery, Dr. Franklin D. Richards will advise painkillers and topical medicine for application on the sutures to reduce your discomfort to some extent. If a patient’s threshold of pain is low then doctors advise a pain pump to infuse local anesthesia into the surgery area which helps in pain reduction.

A major cosmetic surgery procedure such as a tummy tuck involves a significant recovery process and downtime. The extent of surgery performed is the key determining factor in the total amount of downtime needed. Abdominoplasty may be performed as a partial, standard, or extended procedure, and the recovery period will differ in each case.

Patients who diligently follow the instructions of the plastic surgeon during the recovery period improve their chances of faster and safer recovery. Dr. Dean Jabs and Dr. Franklin Richards, operating from offices in McLean VA, and Bethesda MD, provide tummy tuck and other procedures to patients in Northern Virginia, Fairfax, Alexandria, VA, Chevy Chase, Rockville, MD, and surrounding communities.

Estimated Recovery Period

In the case of a partial or mini tummy tuck cosmetic surgery procedure, only the area below the navel will be treated for the removal of excess fat and skin. In this procedure, the patient is likely to go through five to seven days of reduced physical activity before they can resume a more vigorous routine. In the case of a standard tummy tuck surgery, the treatment will include the area above the navel.

Similarly, an extended tummy tuck will additionally include liposuction and treatment of the flanks. Both these traditional and extended tummy tuck procedures may involve a period of about two weeks of minimized activity. Drainage tubes will usually be placed in these techniques to prevent fluid build-up at the incision site. These tubes may be removed around the end of the first week. The patient will also be required to wear a special support garment in the first few weeks to expedite healing.

Leading plastic surgeons, Dr. Richards and Dr. Jabs receive patients from Northern Virginia, Fairfax, Alexandria, VA, Chevy Chase, Rockville, MD, and nearby areas for tummy tuck surgery.

Performing Mild Activities

It is important for a patient to know that they are not expected to remain immobilized during the recovery period. In fact, the surgeon will encourage them to get and walk around the home and perform basic day-to-day tasks during the first week. Maintaining a basic activity level will help reduce the risk of blood clot formation.

However, the patient must not lift heavy weights or perform activities that involve too much bending. They must refrain from doing any activities that could put a strain on the incision site. Strenuous exercises should be avoided for at least four weeks to give sufficient time for the healing of incisions. Patients with sedentary jobs may go back to work after a week, while others with physically straining jobs may require at least two weeks before returning to work.

Follow-up Visits

The patient may be required to visit the surgeon’s office a day after the tummy tuck procedure for a detailed assessment of the condition. During this visit, the surgeon may fit the patient with a support garment to help prevent clotting. Weekly follow-up visits may be scheduled after this to monitor the healing progress. During the entire recovery period, the patient would be required to refrain from smoking.
